PennDOT announced today that the bridge carrying Miller Road over the West Branch of Perkiomen Creek in Douglass Township, Montgomery County, has been closed due to severe deterioration of the wingwall and arch barrel discovered during a recent bridge inspection.
Motorists are advised that Miller Road will be closed and detoured between Gehman Road and Henry Road until PennDOT bridge engineers can develop a plan to repair and safely reopen the roadway.
During the closure, motorists will be directed to use Papermill Road, Lone Pine Road, and Niantic Road. Local access will be maintained up to the bridge closure. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling along the detour route because backups and delays may occur.
The single-span, stone masonry arch bridge was built in 1890. The structure is 14-feet-long, 18-feet-wide, and carries approximately 154 vehicles per day. Prior to closing, the bridge, which was listed in poor condition, was posted with a single weight limit of 18 tons and a combination weight limit of 25 tons.
